Enhanced visual designers and editors speed up development times significantly, while intuitive visual designers help to improve your XML editing and XSLT debugging. In short, you can tackle just about any development task, whether its creating dynamic, data-driven applications using an integrated data access, design, and reporting environment, or creating robust applications using the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, the .NET Compact Framework 2.0, and native code -- all supported by Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. You can also easily develop for 64-bit systems using a 64-bit version of the .NET Framework.

Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition includes Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual C#, Microsoft Visual C++, and Microsoft Visual J# programming languages; tools for building Windows and Web solutions; SmartPhone and Pocket PC development tools for building Windows CE-based applications; Visual Database tools; advanced debugging tools, including cross-machine debugging; and much more.

Cross Machine Debugging and Better Web Publishing
Visual Studio 2005, combined with ASP.NET 2.0, offers an improved environment for publishing and administering a Web site. With the built-in publishing features, such as integrated File Transfer Protocol (FTP), you can keep files in your local project and synchronize them with files located on a remote Web server. Visual Studio automatically logs copied files which helps you to identify whether the remote site has been updated with the latest files. And to help protect your site and your IP, you can pre-compile a Web site to publish only executable code, no source files, to your production server. The Web site configuration interface makes it easy to set up and maintain applications, and the new Web Site Administration Tool helps you manage remote sites. You can manage cache settings at the server and Web site level to improve the performance of your published Web sites. And users can manage their own sites with the new ASP.NET Microsoft Management Console (MMC) plug-in.

The Solution Explorer in Visual Studio 2005 also makes it easy for you to clean up unwanted files. Simply choose Clean Solution from the Build Menu and all the intermediate files and output directories in your whole solution will be removed. For Visual C++, you can also use the Project Only submenu of the Build Menu to clean only the project currently selected in Solution Explorer, without cleaning any project dependencies or solution files. Other features include a new checksum feature that matches multiple source file names without any confusion; provider-driven application services that let you extend the powerful features of Visual Studio Team System by adding your own ASP .NET application services seamlessly, giving you complete control over the tools and environment.

MSDN Premium Subscriptions
Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite also includes an MSDN Premium Subscription. 5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any windows developer, May 6, 2007
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Studio Professional w/ MSDN Premium 2005 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
What can I say? Visual Studio Pro and MSDN Premium together are the essential foundations for developing software for Microsoft Windows platforms. For the complete life cycle of a commercial product there are excellent additional specialized tools for help authoring and QA as well as Visual Studio add-ins available from other companies that can significantly boost productivity. For the most part VS and MSDN are all you need to get seriously started. Great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive and Cheap at same time, September 20, 2007
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Studio Professional w/ MSDN Premium 2005 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
Does this cost a couple grand? Yes. Is it worth it? It would be worth it at double the price (or more). Note that there are many different options for Visual Studio and MSDN. Definitely make sure you get the version/edition you need - they range in cost from $0 to around $10,ooo (no the $0 isn't a typo). If you're reading this, you already know about the power of Visual Studio. You already know you need it. Find the edition that fits your needs and if need be pry open your wallet. Every year I check online retailers and every year I end up buying from Amazon. Let's face it - this is expensive and if I'm going to give someone a credit card for this amount, I want to know they are going to be around. Amazon is always near the bottom of price range, and at the top of credibility in my opinion. FYI: While you can purchase directly from Microsoft, even they tell you up front that they are the most expensive option for purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Use it all the time and love it, July 22, 2007

I use it daily on the job. I highly recommend it. I can't imagine trying to do what I do under the time lines I have with out it. It is a powerful and capable development environment. It integrates wonderfully with more than what I use. My only complaint with it is how it will rearrange my code. I like highly legible code. The VS system for arranging the code is less legible than mine. Every other complaint out there revolves around not knowing what you are doing (which is common due to the scope and size of the programming we can do with this product) or other products' glitches you have to work with. I would have given it 5 stars, but the code rearrangement slows me down.
